It has been machine quilted and bound in the poppy fabric. No photo yet, must do that soon before it goes to its recipient. This is a Mystery Quilt hosted by Darelle Castelow in 2001. I partly cut it out and then put it away as my Mother was ill and I stayed at home to look after her until she passed away. I came across it in January and found I had not cut it all out and did not have the sewing instructions. Darelle lives in another suburb of Melbourne and she kindly found the instructions and mailed them to me. I had used one of the fabric for something else as we sometimes do, but was able to purchase more in a slightly darker dye lot. I think that has enhanced the quilt rather than take away from it. Looking at the quilt now a couple of the Snail Trails are not in the right position. Never noticed this before taking this photo.
I have also rejoined the Art Quilt group and taken part in my first challenge it was 'Folklore' I used a piece of silk Simon had dyed for me when he was at University a long time ago. IT is the first time I have cut into it. A3 size quilt.
The first is a flannel quilt for Connor the eldest grandson. I made the top many years ago and had it quilted by Susan Maroney at Hampton or Cranbourne not sure which. Finally finished stitching down the binding and put a label on it this month.
This quilt top was made by Kim Edwards from South Australia. I bought the top through the destash group on Facebook. Kim had the hearts stitched down with Tan thread using a dense zig-zag stitch. I unpicked the hearts added vslioflex ironed them on then appliqued with a small stitched using variegated blue thread. I had the ideal backing in my stash, basted the quilt then machine quilted on my trusty Janome, the attachment bar on the walking foot broke while doing this but found my Elna feet are compatible with the Janome finished the quilting without any hassles. This one is for Connor's mother Allana, Allan's youngest daughter.

The final quilt finished for May is one for Allan's sister Mary. Mary loves Lorikeets and asked for a quilt with Australian birds and Blue. This is a variation of the pattern Wild West Quilts an American page I have deleted the correct URL. The pattern used themed fabrics without cutting them into small pieces. Mary bought most of the fabrics and paid for the quilting as she was anxious to get the quilt sooner rather than later. (*_*). (I think she know me well).
I have also cut out all the blocks for 2 quilts for two of the grandsons here in Melbourne, a single bed one the other is a King Single.
Sept since I last updated my blog. We had a month in Tasmania late December and part of January, it was great catching up with people and we did some touristry things as well. We returned home on January 22nd and I started quilting. I nearly finished 2 baby floor quilts for twin girls Ashleigh and Emma, only have the hand sewing on the binding to do.
The parents can choose which one goes to which girl.
My sister in law also requested a quilt when we were in Tasmania. Mary loves Cockatiels and Australian parrots. I have made this top for her using the Themed Fabric design from http://www.keepsakequilting.com/workin-the-west-quilt-kit this was a small quilt 32 x 46" Marys quilt is 66 x 87". I am pleased how the top has turned out and I know Mary will like it as it incorporates what she asked for Birds and Blue.
I was able to source the fabrics through Little Desert Quilts at Kaniva and Sarah J Home Design in Queensland. 2 fellow Scquilters posted pieces of fabric to me also, unforunately I have lost their names. Thank you to the ladies who helped with fabric. I am pleased my quilting Mojo is back, even on hot and humid days like today. A chilled wine is helping to keep me cool.
For every one I complete I can start another quilt.
This photo is of a Mystery Quilt run through the Yahoo Group Scquilters MQ in 2002. When choosing the fabrics I did not allow enough contrast to enhance the design. Consequently the top languished for years in a plastic crate. Bronwyn van't Hof ran a class Finishing UFO's. All the fabrics I took to replace the one I was not happy with, did not add zing to the top. Luckily Bronwyn had the exact fabric needed in her stash, so we swapped fabrics. I have to finish stitching down the binding and add the label to completely finish it.
Here it is, the fabric that was replaced is the dark purple to make the X lines in the quilt.
I had quite a bit of fabric left from this quilt and as most of the pieces were some of my favourites I made another top this week. A Shattered 9 patch. 2 fabrics are different as there was none left over of the border fabric, I added another 2 different purples the spot and the dark swirl fabric.
I cut 6 X 16 inch squares with 1 1/2 inch strips added plain 3 inch border then pieced 3 inch border and the final border is 4 inches. May not be the right Fibonacci numbers I was working with limited meterage.
It is for her big bed. Mum chose the fabrics from a quilt spotted in a shop. Machine pieced by me and machine quilted by Kylie Cannon of Beaumaris. Also made a normal pillow case and a European pillow case.
It is different to make a quilt to the requirements of another person. THe pillow cases I made are number 2 and 4 in this picture.
Many of those months I have not quilted at all. We moved and will all the unpacking, rearranging and finding places for all our things in a smaller area, was a little stressful. All settled now thank goodness.
In March our granddaughter Chloe turned 13 and I promised her a big girls quilt for her birthday, I still have the binding to stitch down this weekend for her and Chloe loves it. The quilt is 80 x 80inches so it should last her quite a few years. Chloe still uses the quilt I made for her when she went into a single bed, that had little fairies on it. This one I think is very eye catching. The lady who took the photo said it would look better with grandma in it.
The mauve/purple one is from a kit I bought at Calico Crossroads in Exeter Tasmania, thanks to my dear husband who spotted the sample quilt hanging in the rafters.
The second one is a Disappearing 9 Patch with a Difference. The difference being I made a mistake in cutting the 9 patch squares and the pieces didn't match well so I cut out circles and appliqued over the mistakes.

For those who know me well they will notice that the Disappearing 9 Patch is not in colours that I normally use. Another challenge for me this year is to use colours other than my normal purples and mauve tones.
The background is black synthetic fabric which is double layered, the top layer is scrunched to give the appearance of bubbles.
I randomly cut strips of grey lurex organza and laid these on top of the black, the strips were stitched down with silver thread. The next step was to attack the quilt with a heat gun melting away some of the layers exposing in some places the white background fabric. Then I mixed silver and white Luminaire fabric paints and added colour onto the black and white places. Finally I added more stitching and then zig-zagged the edges together. I have called this piece 'Cascade of Light'.
As the quilt is black and silver it does not photograph well.
The quilt will be auctioned at the Dinner on June 9th. Made from Kaffe Fassett Jelly Rolls Bought 2 as Kaffe's Jelly Rolls only had 28 fabrics and I wanted a reasonable size quilt. The quilt measure 158 X 170cms. I machined quilted this one and I am pleased with the result.
Noticed a few stray cottons that I have to remove before delivery. Now to do a Deb Layt wall hanging, started in a class 20th May nothing went right was too distracted, came home to find sister had experienced heart problems lucky she was in hospital at the time and early intervention saved her from a heart attack.Fran Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02129528823762867722noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3846617877078583149.post-64688950286806236162012-05-16T11:34:00.000+10:002012-05-16T11:34:44.615+10:00Baby Floor quiltOn May 5th I finished the top and backing for the expected babies floor quilt. SMS'd the photos to daughter for her perusal. She texted back better keep sewing M's baby arrived this morning around 6 am a month early. So pull all stops out made label, basted, machined quilted, machined the binding pressed and the quilt was finished. Gave it to daughter on Mothers Day for her to deliver it to M & C's little Emily Rose. The quilt attracted a lot of ooh's and aah's at the Bistro were we had lunch when daughter showed it to the rest of the group, ladies from other tables were coming over for a look.
The baby is due sometime in May so not long to go. The blocks are made from Hungry Carterpillar fabric with the addition of three other fabrics my daughter likedthey all look good together.
Have to piece the front together then check if I need to stitch another border on this piece.
The Christmas period was busy, Allan went to Tasmania to see his youngest daughter graduate with First Class Honours in Sociology. Then we had a 2 week break at the beach in our caravan.
I couldn't settle to quilting until mid February since then I have finshed a 1600 quilt, completed a Gail Pan UFO and tried the Long Quilting stitches on my Janome, made a Japanese quilt for Bay Quilters Challenge, the binding is not finished on that yet.
The Gail Pan Design is one I bought in Nowra in 2007 while we were caravaning around Australia.
It is called In My Garden. It was fortitious that I finished this wall hanging on Monday as Gail was the guest speaker today (wednesday) at Carrum Downs Scquilters. Lots of lovely show and tell from Gail and the other ladies at the gathering.
This is the 1600 quilt made from 2 1/2" strips. I didn't use a Jelly Roll I bought 25cm (10") pieces of fabric and cut 4 strips from each of the 11 fabrics. It was machine quilted by Laurene Horsnell at Moorabin. I will be giving this one away.
He weighed 6lb 15ozs with a shock of dark hair. We are both enamoured of the gorgeous little man. Tomorrow we are going to visit and deliver the quilt I have made from him. It is an I Spy on one side with half square triangles swaures and sashing on the other. The pattern was from a sheet I got from Spotlight 'Floral Impressions'
The VICDRG are having a black tie fund raising dinner at Fenix Restaurant Richmond on September 10th. I made 1 medium sized wall hanging, one mall hanging and a babies quilt. Not going to the dinner not our thing anymore.
Bay Quilters had invited Lessa to give a talk at our Saturday monthly meeting and teach a paper piecing workshop on the Sunday. Paper piecing has always been a technique I avoided but after yesterday it is now a technique I will use more in my quilts.
It was massive needed 2 days to be able to see everything. Lots of lovely layouts, plants and gadgets for sale. So many people on the Sunday should have gone earlier in the week. Follow the link to see the photos I took while there some of the photos are for using in my art quilts looking at texture.
It is for granddaughter Sara for her to use in their caravan. Big sister suggested Sara needed a quilt as BS had one to use in the van. I bought the fabrics (all fat quarters) from Hatched and Patched while on SCQ's retreat in Bathurst last year just because I liked them and they fitted perfectly for Sara's quilt.
Cut 2 1/2" strips stitched together in lots of 5 cross cut and restitched. Had the border fabric in my stash and the backing has lovely purple butterflies on a grey background. Sue from Cotton Top Quilting machine quilted the quilt with a design called 'Funky Flowers' it looks good.
I used fabric the dad said he liked, he actually wanted the nappy bag made from it, but mum to be said NO.
I machine quilted this quilt with a meandering squiggle from top to bottom. A lady from my quilt group said it would be my fault is Phoenix has mental problems. lol. The backing fabric has skulls crossed bone and skate boards scattered over it black background with red and white.Fran Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02129528823762867722noreply@blogger.com2
